  • CAMPING - While many will spend the day enjoying the enchanting desert terrain and rugged mountains in the Yuma area, overnight camping can extend this pleasure in many areas. Campers may select their own site in the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge.In the Imperial Dam Recreation Area, Senator Wash and Squaw Lake Campground offer campsites on or near their lakes shores. Long-term permits are available for some areas. Additionally, Mittry Lake Wildlife Area offers campsites.
  • CENTURY HOUSE MUSEUM - 240 South Madison 928-782-1841. A regional museum of the Arizona Historical Society, Century House is one of Yumas oldest and most historic buildings. Once the home of pioneer merchant E. F. Sanguinetti, the museum now exhibits artifacts, photographs and furnishings of Arizonas territorial period. Colorful gardens and aviaries with exotic and talking birds are maintained as they were at the turn of the century. Museum, Library And Gift Shop are open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tues through Sat.
  • FISHING - While one does not often associate waterways with the desert, this is what sets Yuma apart from other Southwest destinations. With the completion of the Laguna Dam in 1909, and the Imperial Dam in 1938, the Colorado River became a series of lakes and scenic waterways. For the avid fisherman, these cool waters are home to world class bass fishing, where the serious or novice angler will find Largemouth Bass, Striped Bass, Flathead Bass,Channel Bass, Blue Bass, Tilapia, Catfish, Crappie, Striped Mullet and Bluegill.

Based on the book by Alice McLerran, Roxaboxen is the exact location where her mother and sisters once played.
  • ST. THOMAS MISSION - Ft. Yuma Indian Reservation 760-752-0283. Built on the grounds of the original Mission founded by Father Garces in 1780, the Mission is a reminder of the long history of the Quechan Indian Nation and Yuma. The present Catholic Mission Church was built in 1922 and is a replica of the original Mission that was destroyed during an Indian uprising in 1855. Open during services on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. And Sunday 10:30 a.m.
  • WATER RECREATION - Most of these lakes and waterways offer recreational boating, with boat launching available at Senator Wash, Squaw Lake, Hidden Shores, Mittry Lake and Martinez Lake. Hidden Shores and Martinez Lake offer boat rentals while water skiing is permitted at Martinez Lake and Senator Wash and an 8 mile stretch of the Colorado River paralleling the Picacho State Recreation Area.

  • YUMA CROSSING STATE HISTORIC PARK, 210 North 4th Avenue 928 329 0471 The Quartermaster Depot was authorized by Congress in 1865 and served the entire Southwest as a material transfer and distribution point for troops stationed at the outposts of the Arizona Territory. Open 7 days a week, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. except holidays.
  • YUMA TERRITORIAL PRISON STATE PARK Giss Parkway and Prison Hill Road 928 783 4771 between 1876 and 1909 this penitentiary housed many of Arizonas most dangerous and notorious criminals. Famed in movies, literature and television, the remains of the prison are now Arizonas most visited State Historic Park.
